Originally from Maryland, Leigh obtained her B.S. in Biology from Gettysburg College and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from NYU School of Medicine. Under the mentorship of Dr. Carlos Fernandez-Hernando she identified and characterized novel genes and miRNAs involved in the regulation of lipid metabolism using functional genomic screens. As a postdoctoral fellow at Yale School of Medicine, Leigh applied stable isotope tracer methodology to study insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease.
